Learning About Places
What is Project-Based Learning (PBL)?
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a hands-on way for children to explore real-world questions or problems over time. Instead of just memorizing facts, children investigate, create, and share what they learn. In our preschool geography unit, PBL helps children:
-
Investigate their surroundings and community.
-
Collaborate with friends and adults.
-
Create projects to show their learning.
-
Reflect on their discoveries.
Benefits for preschoolers: PBL builds critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and creativity, while helping children understand their community and the world in meaningful ways.

Our Theme: “My Neighborhood, Our World”
-
Begin with your home, school, and neighborhood, then expand to the city, state, and world.
-
Questions we explore:
-
What places do I visit each week?
-
How do I get from home to school?
-
Who helps our community?
-
Where is our class in the world?
-

Project Ideas
Your child will choose a small project about a place that’s special to them. Projects might be:
-
A simple map showing the way to school
-
A drawing of their favorite park or store
-
A shoebox model (like the library or playground)
-
A photo collage of places they visit
Children will get time at school to create and practice sharing. Families can help at home if they’d like.

Choosing a Project
-
Pick something your child likes and can do in a small, manageable way.
-
Projects can be done alone or with a friend.
-
You can use familiar materials from home or school.
-
Family participation is optional and flexible.
